Huawei Starts Testing Smartphones With Its Own Hongmeng OS

Well, if you have been staying updated with the latest tech news, then you might know about the US Trade ban on Huawei. In May 2019, the US government banned Huawei from using any software or hardware created by American companies. That means that Huawei can’t use Android as an operating system. However, now the Chinese company, of course, Huawei can use US products as Trump reversed his previous blacklisting. During the Ban, the Chinese company has announced that they are working on a new operating system name Hongmeng OS. Now a new report by the Global Times suggests that Huawei is in the process of launching a budget smartphone that will be powered by Hongmeng OS. The upcoming Hongmeng-powered smartphone will be priced around CNY 2,000 (Approximately INR 21,000). The reports also stated that Huawei would show off the new Hongmeng OS at its developer conference, which will be held on Friday, August 9th in Dongguan, China. Let me remind you, Huawei executive Catherine Chen said in July that Hongmeng OS is being built, but not for smartphones. Catherine Chen said that the operating system is designed for the Internet of Things (IoT) devices like Smart TVs and contains only fewer lines of code than a mobile operating system. On the other hand, the CEO of Huawei, Ren Zhengfei previous said that Hongmeng is likely to be faster than Android. Ren Zhengfei does say that Hongmeng is intended to work across IoT devices, but he also mentioned that Huawei is prepping to create an app ecosystem to rival Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store. So, Huawei’s comments on Hongmeng OS haven’t been entirely consistent. So, what do you think about this? Share your views with us in the comment box below.
